Rent Stabilization to Exempt do to a fire?
I am going through something familiar i been living in an apt for over 20 years my lease says im in a stabilization apt, they have not raised my rent in over 10 years, they now have a new Manager that decided to raise my rent 10% and also gave everyone section 8 in a way it helped everyone struggling but screw the ones like me that don’t qualify . i originally had contacted DHCR because of a rat infestation and how they were just not fixing nothing, this new manager started filling papers stating they want to become exempt do to a fire the building had years ago and that they had to rebuild, i have a coworker that lived through the fire he states it was empty and they just fixed but they never actually demolished the building, point is wether they demolished or not back in 2004 i was given a rent stabilization lease how can they go back now over 40 years and say they showed proof of the fire and other stuff so now they exempt? i sent back the par to fight it but my neighbor says she just got paper work back and we lost and they won, I’m now waiting to see how much rent increase will i get to consult a lawyer, i feel like suing the property management for falsely having me believe i was rent stabilization for 20 years and also Housing and Community Renewal , they told me not to agree to the 10% increase because it should have only been a 3% increase and that they can’t retaliate and all this nonsense and that there was no way in hell they would never become exempt and now look , can someone help Yonkers NY Westchester
