[LFG][Java] I want to get a group of people together in making AI robots in RoboCode!
The first hangout already ended. That doesn't mean that you still can't join. Come join our Google+ Community here and look at the updated thread here
First off, here is a summary of what RoboCode is, if you don't know already.
Robocode is a programming game where the goal is to code a robot to compete against other robots in a battle arena. The player is the programmer of the robot, who will have no direct influence on the game. Instead, the player must write the AI of the robot telling it how to behave and react on events occurring in the battle arena. So the name Robocode is a short for "Robot code". The game is designed to help you learn Java, and have fun doing it. Robots are written in the JavaTM Programming Language, and the Robocode game can run on any operating system supported by the Java Platform, which includes all common operative systems like Windows, Mac OS X, Linux etc. Robocode's battles take place in a battlefield, where small automated 6-wheeled robots fight it out until only one is left. Please notice that Robocode contains no gore, no blood, no people, and no politics. The battles are simply for the excitement of competition that we love so much.
Here is the wiki to robocode. Where you would see what it's all about.
Here is the download for the library and the application of RoboCode.
Overall, I believe RoboCode is a great way to expand your knowledge on the Java programming language and a really fun way of doing it as well.
FAQ
I'll add more as they show up
What do I need to join this?
In my opinion, anyone with a willingness to learn is accepted. You also need to know basic Java to actually do anything but if you already know other programming languages, RoboCode doesn't require you to have extremely difficult concepts to know. If you ever need help with something, I know Java and can probably help you. I bet others can too if I'm not available
What are we gonna do?
My idea is that of us first learning Robocode for 2 weeks starting this Sunday at a determined time.We will make use of Google Hangouts as is seen in the Various Small Projects thread. Two weeks is just an arbitrary number. If the general consensus is that of "We feel as though we know enough" then I would be all for going to Phase 2 of the whole thing. Phase 2 is actually setting up a tournament for everyone's bots that they will create/optimize every week. What's going to happen here is that we're gonna be screen sharing one screen, mine. I will load up all of the bots of all of the contestants which are going to be in a group and we will have a tournament. We will do this every weekend until the end of summer. After every session, the winner must show his code to everyone and explain it. That way, we can all learn and become better programmers. If the winner did something wrong code wise, people can correct him/her and so on.
Most importantly, if you have any suggestions, please comment below what you feel should be added/removed and I will take it into consideration.
Although I did say looking for group, I also want this to be a learning experience for all of us. If you are an expert programmer, that's totally cool by me, It would be great to have someone that is way better explain things to the rest of the crew! If you just started programming, I feel as though this would be a little too difficult but try it if you wish, it's not like we have to kick anyone out.
All of the sessions will be recorded as well and will be on my Youtube channel!
EDIT: TO JOIN, PLEASE PM ME THE FOLLOWING:
What time you're free this sunday
Your familiarity with Java.
Your familiarity with Git.
Your Google+ Email so that we can use Hangouts.
EDIT 2: It seems as though we have gotten the ideal number of people for this. If you would still like to participate, look for the youtube recording of all our hangouts at my youtube channel www.youtube.com/stefan987654123
