As a new dm, how to deal with failed checks?

Like the title said, Im a new dm wondering on how to deal with failed checks. As an example, for my last session for my campaign, one of my players wanted to do an investigation check and the check i had in mind was 10 and they failed it, I just said that the room that they investigated in had nothing. Is there any way to give players information even if they failed the check?
