Need Advice on Diet and Weight Loss While Living in a Hostel (19M)
Hey everyone, I'm 19 (turning 20 in Dec), male, 5'9"-5'10", and around 77-80 kg. I live in a college hostel where the canteen is fully vegetarian (except for egg dishes). Outside food is allowed occasionally, usually once a week, and I go home on weekends.
I’ve been gymming on and off since last year. I started at 62 kg in August 2023 and gained muscle and weight, reaching 65 kg by October. I took a break until August 2024 and gained more weight, mostly fat, due to inactivity and poor diet. Now I’m around 80 kg, with the weight mostly around my belly, chest, and chin, which is affecting my body image badly. I can't motivate myself to go to the gym, majorly because the gym is overly crowded most of the time.
So I have resorted to changing my diet.
But there are issues, the canteen food is pretty bad—dinners are usually tasteless paneer or dal or some dry sabzi with paratha, and lunches aren’t much better with options like pav bhaji or chhole bhature etc. Breakfast is repetitive with pasta, bread omelets, or paratha dishes. This lack of variety and poor taste pushes me to eat more fast food like pizza and momos (we have fast food outlets in college), and KFC burgers when I go out with friends or on my way back home.
I also have a tricky situation: my family doesn’t know I eat non-veg, so I can't have chicken at home. So yes my eating habits are unhealthy, and I often skip breakfast due to classes, and eat something from friends' homemade lunch, not to fill my stomach ofc, but to at least have something. For lunch, my friends sometimes bring me a chicken roll (Chicken chunks, with sauces and onion pieces wrapped in a roti), if not that I try to get something from canteen but if nothing interests me, I just get some cheese sandwich or maybe fast food. Dinners are usually just canteen food. I also have a lot of late-night cravings so I buy chips and stuff.
I want to ask for serious help in changing my eating habits to lose fat and maybe get more active (thinking of playing badminton). I have a kettle and could get a toaster so I can DIY some meals I guess. Any suggestions on how to plan my meals or healthier options would be really helpful!
