A curious thought?
I would like to ask something here, but it may not be well received. I am posting a trigger warning, so please, if you are not in a healthy place, don't read on further.
What is going to happen to the narcissists in the world if we as a collective society don't find a way to provide support for them?
Hear me out.
Narcissism IS a mental health disorder. I know there is no cure for it, only therapy to learn how to manage behaviors. I know that a narcissist has to WANT treatment in order to move through the undesirable behaviors. We have found ways to manage many other disorders to provide a healthy and fulfilling life for those who are afflicted.
Why is there no "cure" (for lack of a better word) for those with narcissism?
Eventually, people are going to see the warning signs sooner and faster and avoid these individuals altogether. This is going to worsen their mental health and make them, potentially dangerous. Just like many disorders, THERE ARE reasons that a person either has narcissistic behaviors or NPD.
At what point do we, as a society, find a way to deal with these kinds of individuals?
I ask as a mother to a child who has narcissistic behaviors due to abandonment issues and likely other things. I love him. I always will. I can see his self-destructive behavior and I dread knowing he will victimize others as a result. I feel responsible for how he developed these behaviors and want to keep him from hurting others in the process.
Has anyone else given thought to this?
I would like to clarify, having the behaviors or disorder does not justify their treatment of others....EVER. I do not condone their actions and behaviors in the least. But the compassionate side of me also feels bad that they are discarded, either by their own choice or the choice of another, and there is nothing that can be done except hope they get help before they hurt someone else.
Just the ramblings of an old lady.
