External hard drive still thinks there's a bunch of data on it

I have an external hard drive that was reaching capacity, so I removed several Gb of data to make room for other files. When I plug it back in, it thinks the data is still there, but it's not appearing in the file explorer screen. How can I find this data to remove it again, or how can I convince the OS that it's no longer there?
