Politics in elementary school

I remember in elementary school we would have pretend elections and discuss who we would vote for. I asked my 1st grader if they did anything for the election and he said no and his teacher said they were not going to discuss it.

For the record I am not happy with the results. I'm sad that politics have become so extreme that teachers don't want to discuss it in school- I'm assuming that is the reason.

Is this typical now to not discuss upcoming elections and policies?
