Advice on Desoldering and Soldering an SMD M.2 Connector on Laptop.
I was looking to upgrade my Lenovo Flex 5's SSD from 512GB to 2TB (XS70), but the M.2 SSD connector would only fit a single sided SSD. After checking, it seems like there is enough clearance to solder a new taller M.2 connector that would be able to support the double sided SSD.
This is my current plan:
- Desolder the m.2 connector using Flux and the Hot Air Gun
- Clean up the area with alcohol and solder wick to remove the solder originally on the pads
- Solder on the supports for the m.2 slot so that it remains in place
- Use drag soldering (put a lot of solder on the tip and drag it across the connector) to solder the rest of the connections.
As a newbie in soldering, I was wondering if there was a better way to do this and what precautions should I have. What temperatures should I be using for desoldering the slot, and should I worry about calibration issues with the temperature sensors in my soldering station (link is below)? Also, is there any way to protect the other parts around the connector, so they don't accidentally get desoldered?
I have a little soldering experience (Through hole and soldering wires to pads), but this is my first time doing SMD soldering + desoldering.
I purchased a few M.2 Extension Cards (https://www.amazon.com/Suckoo-Extension-Adapter-Protection-Compatible/dp/B0CN6R6KGR) to practice SMD soldering and desoldering with before I do it on the laptop. Soldering on the laptop is likely going to be much harder due to the limited space and many other components around the slot. I already tried putting it to get the M.2 SSD to fit, but unfortunately the extension card adds too much height so there is not enough clearance.
Here are some images of the laptop that show the M.2 connector and the parts around it: https://imgur.com/a/flex-5-internals-2d6cu9g
This is the current soldering station that I am using: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0154G4A28
It says Flexzion but it is actually an YiHUA soldering station.
Here are the rest of the soldering supplies:
