Cold Take: We Love Cinematics, Bring Them Back
Coming from someone who plays a lot of competitive Overwatch, I’m honestly surprised that Blizzard decided to scale back on their cinematics. For many of us, these cinematics were a gateway into the world of Overwatch, giving us a glimpse into the stories and personalities of our favorite heroes. It's hard to measure exactly how valuable these cinematic experiences are to the player base, but it’s clear they add a unique depth to the game that no other title can quite replicate.
These short films do more than just look amazing—they create a lasting emotional connection to the characters. They’ve been one of Blizzard’s most powerful tools for player retention and marketing, showcasing the care and creativity that goes into building the Overwatch universe. Whether you’re a fan of Starcraft, Diablo, or WoW, Blizzard’s cinematics have always been part of the whole experience. They’re masters of storytelling in a way that few other companies can match, and that alone sets Overwatch apart from other games.
When Blizzard decides to cut back on these, it feels like something essential is being taken away. Without these visual stories, the game risks feeling like “just another hero shooter.” Imagine if we still had a regular series of high-quality cinematics, each one building up hype for the next story or hero. Does anyone else remember the Reinhardt “Honor and Glory” cinematic? It was incredible and still holds up to this day, inspiring tons of reaction videos and even drawing new players into the game.
I know they still release some smaller, comic-style stories, but I feel like the magic is lost without full-fledged cinematics. It’s tough to feel connected to new heroes when we don’t get to experience their stories in the same way. Take Ramattra, for instance—he’s such a fascinating character, and a cinematic could explore his motives, his relationships, and his struggles in a way that no short story can.
What do you all think? Are we missing out on a huge opportunity to breathe life into Overwatch’s new heroes and stories?
