AITAH for “ruining” my birthday?
I celebrated my 17th birthday a few days ago. Birthdays are difficult for me, as, for the past few years, I haven't had a good birthday. I didn't ask for anything this year, only a piercing. A few days before my birthday, my parents and grandparents surprised me with a new used car (2017), which I was very grateful and excited for.
On the day of my birthday, I went to take a shower and realized the shower head was steadily streaming water. I asked my mom about it, and she said the water had started running and couldn't be turned off with the knob. I asked if I could still take a shower because I hadn't the previous night and I had school, she said yes.
I was exhausted. I turned the hot water on (the cold water was running) and, in my fatigue, turned the cold tap a few times. The knob came off in my hand and the water began to run from the knob like a fire hydrant. I told my mom and she blew up at me. She told me l "fucked it up" and sarcastically repeated "happy birthday" to me. I cried on the drive to school and multiple times throughout the day.
After school, I picked up my boyfriend to go and get a small treat to lift my spirits, but I ended up sobbing to him in my car. My mom happened to call me in the middle of this and, hearing that I was upset, said, "well, I'm sure it's not about the water. You didn't care this morning." I told her it was, and that for the last few of my birthdays, I had been yelled at and triggered to cry. She blew up at me for this, too, and said she was "so sorry I couldn't provide you a glamorous birthday."
Later, I asked if we were still going to dinner (a family birthday tradition.) she said yes, but when i asked if my boyfriend was invited, she said she "didn't know" | was going to invite him, basically giving me a whatever response. I picked him up and we all left together. My mom made a few snide comments about me "breaking the shower,” which dampened my mood, again.
By the time that we got home I just wasn't thinking straight, I was so tired. I took a nap before I finally told my boyfriend I could take him home, but I was too tired to drive, so for some reason I thought the car ride to his house would wake me up. He said he could drive me in my car to his house, and that I could drive back. I agreed, but when we got to his house, I didn't feel any better and had developed a huge headache. I called my mom. She yelled at me for being stupid and irresponsible, told me she was going to drug test me, and grounded me for "ruining the entire day."
I know having someone else drive my car without being unsure on the vehicle is wrong, but AlTAH?
