Health Insurance (Student) Alternatives

General Question

Hey yall, hope everything is well. I am moving from NJ to MA for graduate school. Anyways, I had insurance through my job but it ended a month ago and then I got NJFamilyCare which is the state's Medicaid anyways, I am starting school in January in MA, and the school is charging me for insurance below. Also, the insurance the school is providing is by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

|| || |Coverage Period|Annual|Fall|Spring/Summer|Summer Only| |Dates of Coverage| 8/15/2024-8/14/2025 | 8/15/2024-12/31/2024 | 1/1/2025-8/14/2025 | 5/1/2025-8/14/2025 | |Student Cost|$3,715.00|$1,413.00|$2,318.00|$1,082.00| |Waiver Deadline Dates|August 1, 2024|August 1, 2024|December 1, 2024|May 1, 2025|

I am getting a loan both unsubsidized and GradPlus since I don't have much to pay it in cash, and trying to save money and also trying to avoid getting loans when needed. I am thinking of not getting insurance but the school requires it. Is there any alternative to it? I am thinking of getting a cheaper alternative, then I can submit a waiver and don't have to pay for the insurance.

Waiver requirements are below:

  • Your plan must provide access to doctors, specialists, hospitals, labs, pharmacies, and mental health/behavioral health providers in the college campus area without restriction or limitation. Please note, if you are enrolled in an out-of-state Medicaid, HMO, or EPO your coverage may not be sufficient in Massachusetts. Many out-of-state plans do not provide comprehensive benefits outside of the home service area.
  • Urgent or emergency-only coverage in Massachusetts is not sufficient and does not meet the SHIP waiver requirements.
  • The policy must be a US-filed and approved, ACA (Affordable Care Act) compliant health insurance plan. International insurance plans, travel insurance, and short-term limited-duration plans are not accepted.
  • The plan should pay medical providers directly for inpatient and outpatient care. Reimbursement plans are not accepted.

Does anyone have any recommendations or do I need to get the schools insurance? I can't use my states medicaid.
