[US, MI] HR not actioning complaints about violent /homophobic coworker

There are a lot of factors at play here, so I will try to lay them out simply:

I work for a small, privately owned company (~40 employees) in Michigan.

Leadership at the company (owners, CEO) are conservative Christians.

We are not a ministerial organization.

For about a year, I shared an office with "John." During that time, John made countless hateful and violent comments about his coworkers. In June, he compared same-sex intercourse to "wanting to fu** monkeys." I wrote down the conversation immediately and reported it to HR.

I am queer and closeted. At such a conservative company, I do not want my sexuality to be known or talked about. But of course I will report comments like that and was extremely upset about the remark, and remain so.

I'm September, our HR manager told me to leave work early "for my safety" while they fire John. I did so, including sneaking out of the building and avoiding windows from the outside, because I was worried that John would become violent--based on comments both from John and HR.

When I came in the next day, John was in my office. I had a difficult conversation with HR and asked that they keep me out of future decisions, because that experience was wildly stressful to me and it scared the hell out of me to see him in there unexpectedly.

In October, John went on a tirade--just to me--about "beating the shit out of" certain coworkers. I reported this to HR as well and it was swept under the rug. The HR manager told me that my complaints have not been heard by executive leadership because they would rather handle it "quietly."

On top of being literally afraid of John (we both work around box cutters, and that's genuinely a concern for me), and being queer, I am not a Christian and believe that I would probably be fired if the owners find out what religion I follow. I have only told one other coworker about it because they are someone I trust and I feel so isolated here.

There are crosses and bible quotes ALL over the office. On desks and in public spaces. The default email signature for employees includes "thank you and God bless."

Culturally, obviously, this is a TERRIBLE fit for me. However, this job works extremely well for my career and lifestyle right now.

Now it is November, John is still here and aggressive, and I am feeling miserable and abandoned by my employer.

I feel like there is so much weirdness going on that I don't even know what question to ask of this community... But am I incorrect that this feels off/inappropriate?

Thank you.
