Including overdue tasks in task count

Whether on my phone, watch, or menu bar on my Mac, the task count only includes tasks that are due today. If I don't finish a task that day then the overdue task stays on my today list (which is what I'd want) but for some reason the count will no longer include it.

I've tried looking into the settings and into the docs to no avail. Does anyone know if this simple functionality is possible?
