Windows update caused usb to require formatting

I had a windows update and left an external USB plugged in. I removed it after the update finished and the laptop was off. Next time I go to plug the USB in, it is unreadable and states either "the parameter is incorrect" or "the USB needs formatting".

Any help with this would he hugely appreciated as I have old photos stored on there as the only location!
