Denon - Samsung TV setup

I am trying to connect a Denon AVR760H to a Samsung flat screen.
Right now it’s connected using HDMI 2 (no ARC) and everything works fine. When I have the TV send its audio signal to my dad’s headphones, the stereo speakers shut off. Since I’m not using ARC why would that not work? What am I missing? Thank you for reading.
