Windows update requires external USB to now require formatting. Data recovery required

I had a windows update and left an external USB plugged in. I removed it after the update finished and the laptop was off. Next time I go to plug the USB in, it is unreadable and states either "the parameter is incorrect" or "the USB needs formatting".

Any help with saving the data on the USB would he hugely appreciated as I have old photos stored on there as the only location!
