Aaron had been playing football for nearly as long as he could walk. Now 18 and in his senior year, he was one season away from heading off to college on a full scholarship and working towards NFL aspirations.

The ride here wasn’t very easy at all. Aarons dad left us when he was about 10. Every practice, game, recruiting trip, required me to invest time and money that we barely had to make sure he could live out his dream.

But one thing you don’t consider when planning your child’s future is that someone else is doing the same thing. So when the new kid transferred from out of state and challenged for Aaron’s starting QB spot, I was a bit worried. And when it was clear that he was going to win it, I started to panic. 18 years of sacrifice potentially down the drain at any moment.

Everyone in the community knew that the team’s coaches were young, arrogant, and only cared about winning. It was largely why the team was so good and the QB was guaranteed a spot on a college team. But surely there was something else they wet interested in other than football. Maybe something I could offer?

That’s probably why I offered to host their upcoming coaches only film session at our house rather than the dingy locker room. And why I told Aaron to spend the night with his friends to relax. And why, when the coaches watched me answer the door, I was in anything but my normal mom attire.
