Advice on Staying at University vs. Switching to a Technical School
I’m 21 years old, a third-year university student currently working on my bachelor’s degree in psychology. My mother wants me to transfer from my four-year university to a technical school because my scholarships no longer fully cover my tuition, and I’ll need to pay the remaining tuition, housing, and living costs. While I’m willing to take out a loan to cover these expenses, my mother is strongly against it, saying loans will only lead to a difficult, unhappy life. Personally, I feel that many people take out loans and live perfectly happy lives, and I think funding my education is a worthwhile investment.
My mom attended a technical school before transferring to a university, and my dad, who usually supports her opinion, also went to a technical school. I suspect that my mom’s background influences her judgment, as she feels starting at a technical school worked for her. But going from university to a technical school is different than going the other way around, and I’ve put a lot of time and effort into my university studies that I’d like to see through.
I’m working on setting boundaries with my parents, who are very controlling, but I sometimes struggle to fully trust my own decisions. I’d appreciate any advice on whether staying at university is worth the financial commitment, or if switching schools could be the better option, as well as any tips on navigating loans or managing costs. Thanks so much for any guidance!
