Has anyone read the Reynolds Pamphlet ?
I got curious and found it online. It’s written of course in the very verbose style of the time, plus Hamilton wants you to understand exactly what he’s saying. He starts out by discussing the accusations against him, and is very indignant that anyone would think he’d be involved in any dealings with a small-time punk like Reynolds. Then, because he’s a lawyer, he spends pages accounting for every piece of paper that’s crossed his desk. Here’s Letter 1 from Mr A to Mr B, and it says this. Here’s Letter 2, Mr B’s response, and it says this. Here’s a receipt for $100 I paid to Bob, and a copy of the receipt I gave Bill for the $100 he paid me.
The actual scandalous part is pretty short. He’s mostly concerned with proving absolutely that there was no financial shenanigans going on.
