No matter what I do, I cannot for the life of me seem to ever get a relationship or second date.
Sorry if this is a common occurrence and venting topic, but I am seriously at my limit right now.
I am a 23 year old male. I am above average in height, work out on a regular basis, finished college, I am not the most attractive person on the planet but I would like to think I am also not the least attractive. I have a social life and life goals and I also go to therapy. I am not trying to sell myself out to you, the readers, but I am trying to paint as objective a picture I can.
The last relationship I had was in high school, the time when probably people are most eager to go out and meet new persons and have new experiences. But ever since 2020 and the lockdown, I feel like my dating life has gone downhill in a way I cannot possibly describe without sounding either crazy or silly.
Trust me when I say that I have tried everything. I have tried new looks. Changes of wardrobe. Trying new hobbies or communities. Clubs, pubs, lecture circles, yoga, whatever it is.. I have tried approaching girls on instagram, on tinder or bumble, in real life. I have tried changes in my approach, from being colder and more serious to more open and lighthearted, from a more nice-guy type of approach to being more arrogant (the latter which I do not like in the slightest since my default is to be kinder, more forgiving and respectful). Nothing seems to work.
To be more detailed, and I know I already sound desperate, but bear with me a little longer, I tried everything that was in my control. I even made a list, between 2021 and 2023 I approached no less than 19 different girls, in all the aforementioned scenarios. I think 80% of them straight up were not interested and we did not end up going on a date, because they either directly told me they were not interested or their replies were so slow and disinterested that I got the point. The other 20% of them with whom I did talk and eventually go out with, and this frustrates me the most, did not want to go on a second date. And not because they told me that they do not want to, no, you see, the dates, they all went extremely well every time (we laughed, had interesting topics of discussion, even made plans for a second date), but all of the ones that did go out with me ghosted me immediately after. No replies, no follow up texts or even excuses, no, just straight up ghosting. Honestly it makes me feel like such effing trash because I genuinely start feeling that I am the problem, that I do something (or perhaps everything) wrong enough to not deserve at least an explanation as to why it cannot happen.
I know it might sound unlikely, even for my therapist it is quite hard to believe, but she has at least started to believe me a little more recently since a few such events started piling up already.
I will not go on and blame feminism or modern society for this, I do not think it's the case and honestly those are just mostly stupid excuses. Perhaps the pandemic is to blame for making everybody much more introverted, although that is not a sufficient argument either since I did not change as much since the pandemic ended, at least not to the point where I would start ghosting people.
This whole thing has really taken its toll on me. My self esteem is starting to degrade little by little. I have deactivated all my socials except for Reddit now because it just seems pointless. If I want to go out with my friends I can hit them up with a call, so really the only reason I was even keeping Instagram for example was for the *potential* that I could perhaps strike a conversation with a stranger.
And the entire thing, it's not even about sex or anything like that. Like sure yeah that would be nice, but I yearn to know and be known by someone in a romantic sense (I am trying to make it sound less corny), like, actually form that deeper stronger bond that is the basis for a relationship. But it just seems like it's not for me really. And it hurts me more than I can probably admit.
