My Personal character design ranking

SpoilerFluff

First of all, I want to clarify that this list is completely MY OPINION, so don't take it personally if I rank low a character you love. I also want you all to understand that most Genshin character's designs are actually good enough most of the time and/or accomplish their goal, but there are some that IMO just could be better. Remember, some rankings were influenced by my bias, as any ranking based on opinion, sometimes I just happen to dislike some characters, and I get to like others more.

---How I ranked the designs---

I used the character splash art and in-game model as bases for their design, since the splash art is the first thing new players are gonna see when they get the character for the first time (if they skip it) and also what usually is used to promote the character when their banner comes around. Also used the the in-game model, as this is what most players are gonna see and remember from the character. I also used idle animations, but IMO animations are meant to reinforce the character's concept, not make it clear, so these did not affect the ranking that much.

Then, I based my rankings on these 3 factors:

Coherence: How well does the design express the character occupation and place of origin. Genshin character's have one main concept that is pretty much the base for the design, and that concept should be reflected on the design. Yes, some characters have complex concepts, being several things at the same time, but more often than not only one side of the concept is going to be the focus for the design.

Appeal: Games like Genshin requires character's designs to be appealing in one way or another, since it is trying to sell those characters. Though, some characters do not look as appealing as others, that's quite rare but still happens every so often (case and point being Xinqiu, and maybe Chasca).

Originality: Some of these characters have very basic designs that don't really transmit much about who they are as a person or in this world. Some characters have a design that you would get (or even come up with yourself) if you asked someone to create a design for a specific concept (e.g: knight maid, Chinese opera singer, hot assassin nun, etc), and that kinda makes me rank them low, even if the design is quite appealing or coherent for that character.

I know some characters have designs more focused on their appeal, while other have a more coherent design, but that is not excuse to lean extremally heavy on one and disregarding the other (though, most designs are appealing one way or another). I also understand that some characters have a very basic concept (especially the very first ones) but that should not be an excuse when newer characters raise the bar and show that MiHoyo could always create amazing designs from the beginning (just look at characters from their more recent games).

---Ranks explanation---

Almost Perfect: Just as the name says, no perfect but damn well executed. Most of these designs are incredibly good and transmit what the character is about, what place they do and even how they are seen by other characters, like Arlechinno looking intimidating and important, when she is a Fatui Harbinger and the leader of the House of the Heart (this is an oversimplification, but kinda gets the point for this case).

Great: Perfectly serviceable designs. I do have a couple small nitpicks with some but even then, these designs just work very well for their characters, like Sigewinne being far too human-looking and just having her antennae and tail as vestiges of her Melusine origins, but still accomplishing her goal to look extremally adorable, and to be honest, I don't think she needs more changes (though I would personally like that).

Some nitpicks: Designs that IMO would become far better with some changes. Most characters here have a decent design, but those nitpicks are just something I can't simply ignore and had to lower their ranking because of them. Like Ningguang looking good overall, but she wearing such a revealing dress is something that I cannot accept nor see fit for such a distinguished and important character in the lore.

Unclear: Characters that don't say much about them. Some designs here are really good but they are so ambiguous on what the character is or does that I just can't help but ranking them low. Example: Childe, his design says very little about what he does, he doesn't look like a Fatui Harbinger, nor he does look from Snezhnayan, though his design does fit his personality, at least.

Generic: Pretty much described before on Originality. Any character that has nothing intrinsically unique or special in their desing, or that could be realistically designed by other people that have no knowledge about Genshin, but for other games, cartoons, comics, etc. Characters like Yaoyao, Mika or Rosaria are just perfect examples.

Bad: Characters whose design just baffles me. These characters are exclusively designed on sexy appeal, to the point anything else regarding their design is just lost. The last 5 characters here are especially painful for me to just look at them.

NOTE: I understand that some characters, especially women, got the design they have because of gameplay purposes, things like climbing or sprinting require the characters legs to move freely, but also need to keep the clothes readable from a distance without stretching or distorting them too much. *cough* They also look that way because of the focus on sex appeal over their concept *cough*

NOTE 2: Except for Bad, no characters were ranked within each tier.

And again, don't take this like a personal attack to your favorite character, and remember that I, like everyone else, have some bias towards some characters. If you would like to, you can ask why I ranked a specific character in a specific tier. But i would also like to create a discussion on how you guys would rank the characters designs.
