In this land anyone who shows any promise of magical talent is required to spend a few years training at the Emperor's university of magic. The official story is so that magic users can learn not to be a danger to themselves or their community. Though it was widely believed to also be part of the Emperor's recruitment strategy to identify and train battle mages for his armies.

While this school was quite effective at teaching magic and preventing rogue magic, it also had a stifling effect in that nearly everyone used magic in the same basic forms. There was almost no creativity in magic or innovation. I was one of the former instructors at the university but left after a difference of opinion with the staff there. Striking out on my own I tried to explore different avenues of magic, often involving imbuing items with magical purpose. Though a lot of this work was time consuming and I was in need of an apprentice. Finding a young magic user was tough since most were at the university or once graduated hard to break of some bad habits learned there.

That is until I found you. A young magic user of fledgling talent who was passed over by the Emperor's scouts. Perhaps your ability seemed to weak to be worth training or the scouts simply missed you as your family hid you away. Either way there you were, a wild untrained magic user who would be a perfect apprentice.
