My (40F) very liberal friends are disinviting my BF (41M) from holiday events because he voted for Trump. How do I move forward?
It's just like the title says, many of my friends are very liberal and are for lack of better words "anti-Trump". While I consider myself an independent and understand that people vote for whomever they chose, I chose to not get into conversations that surround politics. The backstory to this is that I am a Black female and my partner is a White male. All of my friends absolutely adore my partner and think he and I do very well together. Now that they know he voted for Trump, no one wants to be around him because they can't "be in the same room with someone who voted that way".
I've had a few friends reach out to say that they are uncomfortable inviting him to their house because they know they will not keep quiet about their feelings and I told them that I understood but I would not be coming alone. I stand by my partner, regardless of what bubble he chose, and now they are upset with me because as a woman of color, how could I be around "someone like that?" But my partner is a really great man, and all of that seems to be just chucked out the window after the election,
I haven't told my partner about any of this because I know it will absolutely piss him off. But I am still hurt; hurt over the fact that people I deemed intelligent and inclusive of all seem to have lost their minds over this election and are willing to throw years of friendship away over a seat in the Oval office, I also fear that in a few months time, they will forget the things that they have said and expect us to just go back to the way things were, but I will not forget. How do I get past this?
