Sharp period pain

i usually get dull throbbing period cramps that are more constant and continuous, and they are usually pretty bad and my flow is also pretty heavy. But lately ive been getting like this really sharp stabbing pain in my lower abdomen and i feel like thats not what a cramp should be feeling like. It hurts so bad but its only for a few seconds. is that normal?
