Jerking as I brake

So earlier today I was driving with my instructor and I notice that when the traffic light turns red I slow down and the car jerks , ex : the car hops from braking. What can I do to stop jerking the brake , should I start to ease on the brake before the traffic light or idk I'm so confused .
