AITAH for getting angry with my doctor for not listening to me.
I am in the hospital. This is not my first time so I’ve learned to be upfront about my care. Two big things have transpired. The first is that I was in the ER and the doctor admitting me to the hospital said that I could have the particular pain medication that works for me. I’m allergic to all opiates and ketamine is the only meds that works to cover my pain. I get up to the floor and they tell me that I can have ketamine but I have told take Dilaudid first. So I take Dilaudid. The next day they tel me that they can’t give me ketamine. They just don’t do that. I tell them to stop the Dilaudid. They say they need to talk to the doctor first! So I turn off the machine that’s pumping a useless medication that I didn’t want and that I’m allergic to. The doctor didn’t seem to like that and kept saying that was all they could do. Okay, just because that’s the only thing you can do doesn’t mean keep doing it!
The second thing. I have a hole in my stomach. All the contents of my stomach come out of me all the time. Everything I eat. Everything I drink. All the stomach juices. So I lose a lot of fluid every day. I need three liters of fluid plumped into my veins plus a substance called tpn that’s like breast milk. Every day I need this to stay alive and hydrated. I was upfront about this in the ambulance, with the Ed staff, with and with the floor nurses. Yet, for some reason, I haven’t been getting my fluids. So it’s day three of not getting my fluids and I’m getting angry because they are basically drying me out. I don’t know how long you’ve gone without drinking anything but go for about two and a half days and you’ll be where I am. I got a bit testy with the doctor and nurses. They say they understand and I just want to say, “you understand what it’s like to be in a desert for three days and have nothing to drink?” I keep asking for ice packs so I can drink the ice water. Am I the asshole for losing my temper with the doctors?
