Hidden mechanics of tech weapons
Everything started when I was minding my own business using blades and berserk. Then I arrived to Dogtown which had great, hard to access sniper spots. Platforming, jumping, climbing, dashing, avoiding barbed wire and trying to figure out which way will lead up in the middle of chaotic fight while still having enemies shooting at me doesn't always lead to success. I decided to pick up a sniper rifle to deal with those Barghest snipers. They deal a lot of damage on very hard so I MUST take them out quickly (about 2/3 of my health in one hit). Even with all the mobility that one hit can swing the tide of battle in a heartbeat. Having 20 tech and 20 cool I decided to get Rasetsu because that's a sniper rifle that will benefit from 2 skill trees as opposed to for example SPT32 Grad, big brain time. Then I decided to test Nekomata to see if it's better. That choice was the single worst choice I made in the entire game.
Now, I like knowing what happens in game and why. Clear and consistent mechanics and skills allow you to know excatly what happens, why you die, fail or succeed. The amount of confusion that sprung from this single decision drove me nuts. To the point.
Weapons used in testing: Ratetsu (V++), Nekomata (V), Senkoh LX (V++, V), HA-4 Hart (IV). When I say "Bolt shot" I mean releasing the trigger when that sound goes off, when the Bolt threshold is reached. When I say "fully charged" I mean maximum charge, beyond the Bolt shot threshold. This is what I found out while losing my mind during testing:
- Fully charged tech weapon shots have low, non-zero chance of applying EMP effect on hit (I don't know if it's per trigger pull or per projectile and I'm not going to test even more with Satara). It deals about 20 damge per tick, 10 times over a period of about 2-3 secons for a total of about 200 additional electrical damage. Unlike bullet damage that can be increased by various means and even crit, this damage is unaffected (no, I won't test increases to electrical damage and dot from cyberware stats). This damage can occur only when you hit with Bolt shot or fully charged weapon shot. This is excatly the same effect as Spinetickler tech weaepon mod has. Two tier 5 Spineticklers will cause your gun to always trigger this effect.
- Bolt shots have moderate chance of applying burn effect on hit (same as above, idk if it per trigger pull or pere projectile). It deals about as much damage per tick as that emp effect but 15 times over slightly longer period for a total of about 300 additional thermal damage. This damage is also unaffected by damage modifiers. This damage can occur only when you hit with a Bolt shot (and never when the weapon is fully charged). Sometimes when this effect is applied an icon, a triangle with a flame inside, will appear above the affected enemy. However this burn damage damage cannot cause enemies affected by tier 4+ Contagion quickhack to explode. The EMP effect and burn are not exclusive, they can both be applied at the same time with one shot.
- Even though Bolt shots "count as fully charged" they can't penetrate through cover. Fully charget shots penetrate ethrough cover (although some don't and I have no idea why - too many layers? too thick? some game objects are impenetrable?)
- Bolt shots upgraded with CHAIN LIGHTNING perk will "release an electric arc that can electrocute up to 3 nearby enemies". Primary target can be affected by mentioned EMP effect as well as mentioned burn effect (each can be applied with their respective probability). This is normal and workng as intended. However... Up to 3 nearby enemies hit by electric arc will have 100% chance of being dealt about 200 physical damage (seems unaffected by damage multipliers and seems constant regardless of weapon used) and 100% chance of suffering about 300 thermal damage from mentioned burn effect,
- Bolt tooltip says that "Full-auto Tech weapons fire Bolts in a short burst. To continue firing Bolts in full-auto press and hold the trigger again after firing the initial burst". That is wrong. Take Senkoh LX for example. It can fire Bolts if you press the mouse button, charge it until you hear the sound, then quickly release the button and press it again. Might be a bug but Senkoh LX and HA-4 Hart can be fully charged and will still fire Bolts. Regardless of mag capacity about 20 consecutive bullets fired this way from Senkoh LX will be Bolts, then it will shoot normal bullets regardless if you press the fire button again (should resume firing Bolts but no such thing happens). Same for HA-4 Hart except this one doesn't have the Bolt sound at all. About 12 consecutive bullets will be Bolts then it will shoot normal bullets. Pressing the firee button again doesn't resume shooting Bolts. I think it might be a time window in which full-auto tech weapons fire Bolts rather than fixed number of bullets. I have no more patience for testing.
- Charging level depends on the scope you're using. Nekomata equipped with tier IV E305 PROSPECTA sniper scope has normal charge time. This scope has vertical indicator on right side showing how much the weapon is charged when you're aiming through it. When the threshold is reached framed RELEASE will appear close to the middle of the scope. Charge level can also be seen as a horizontal line, when you start shooting from hip. Also the Bolt sound effect can be heard every time when charging reaches the Bolt threshold (unless you start charging next shot too fast, immediatley after firing the previous one). Nekomata equipped with tier V Gaki sniper scope causes your weapon to start charging from 40-50% of the charge level at all times. This allows you to shoot Bolts just by tapping the mouse button, WITHOUT CHARGING THE WEAPON. However the Bolt sound will play only once until you hide and pull out your weapon again or switch to another one and then back to the original.
EMP, burn and physical damage from arc are never mentioned anywhere. Same for scope affecting charge level. Also why is damage from Bolts and Chain Lightning thermal and not electrical? What the fuck? Why is so much information hidden? AAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!! To put things into perspective how much of those things did you know?
