Switching from Part 141 to Part 61: Will It Affect My Career?

Discussion

I’m currently training at a Part 141 flight school, but it doesn’t grant a Restricted ATP (R-ATP) for some reason. It’s not part of a university program, and I already have a degree from another institution. While this school has a 141 curriculum, it isn’t affiliated with a university.

I have my PPL checkride next month, but my flight instructor just got called up to the airlines, so I’ve been passed off to another instructor. I’m not sure if I’ll mesh well with the new instructor, so I’m considering switching to a Part 61 school after finishing my PPL here.

My main concern is whether finishing my training at a Part 61 school would hurt my employment eligibility at all or if it would have any negative impact on my career prospects.

For context, the Part 61 school I’m considering has a chief pilot who’s also a DPE and flies for FedEx. My thought process is that I think it would be beneficial having an in-house DPE on top of the connection with the fact that they are a FedEx pilot in regards to getting a job one day.

Any thoughts on whether this switch would be a good move or if I should stick with the 141 program?
