Is it possible to start a long distance relationship if I never met the other before I start ?

Question might be confusing but if I simply put it. If I'm looking for a long distance relationship (might progress is upto time and effort) is it possible to start a long distance relationship if we never met earlier before. Like we never met but we chat online some platform randomly and end up developing some kind of connection.
