LOTF coop question - the progress

I have one question for the coop, can I go through the whole game in only one world with a friend - in the sense that I understand that if someone joins my world they don't make progress in the storyline on their world, but do they need it? Can we just go through the game on one world? Will we lose something this way, such as the ability to level through one character?
