Keitai akai generation glitch?

So, I had started gen 1 for my keitai akai and got to the teen stage before my tama died (it wouldn't let me treat it when it was sick). I reset the device and it set me back to gen 1 even though I had just played it. It's in Japanese so I pressed a button I wasn't able to read and I'm not sure what it said--the first time I played, I pressed a button that I guess skipped the baby stage altogether. I'm just really confused. Anyone know an explanation for this?
