Grand horror
Hi folks - I'm looking for new horror novel to read but am kind of at a loss as to what I should seek out, so I'm hoping to take advantage of the expertise on offer here.
In terms of what I've had good and bad experiences with, I just finished Joe Hill's Heart-Shaped Box and didn't really enjoy it as much as I'd hoped I would. It struck me as a bit trite and predictable, so I'm not looking for anything you'd compare to that.
By contrast, I absolutely love King's IT and Revival (well, the actual horror elements, at least) and Dan Simmons' The Terror. John Langan's The Fisherman was also incredible IMO. I think there's a thread of grandness and malevolence running through these novels, so please do highlight anything you think would scratch that itch.
I'd also be open to reading good content in which the antagonist is the setting rather than a being that actually verbalises its malevolence. I have in mind novels like White Is For Witching, The House Next Door and The Shining, all of which I got a lot of enjoyment out of.
Many thanks in advance.
