How many degrees can an aquarium heater typically raise the water to?

I bought a 300w heater for a 40 gallon patio pond. Currently the water is at 65F and i set the heater to 74F. Is that too much for the heater to handle? Water will probably go down to low 60s at night. Should i set the heater to maybe 3-5 degrees above the water temp instead?
