Buying crypto on f1 opt

Hello everyone

I am a student on an F1 visa, currently on OPT. Am I allowed to buy cryptocurrency? If I buy it with US dollars and just hold it without selling, as a nonresident alien, do I need to report it on my taxes, or is reporting required only when I sell? Thank you
