I have 4300 hours in D2 and stopped playing a year ago. YOU CAN TOO.
I know people are weird/elitist about credentials on this game so here:
Steam Hours D2: 4312.7
Time Wasted Hours: 2747

Hoping to offer some insight to my old community about quitting Destiny and where I'm at a year after doing so. Watched/read some things today just for some giggles and . . . . wow. I won't offer any insight or suggestion to how Bungie can better the game or win players back (I haven't played in forever so wtf do I know about it), nor any solace to other players who want to keep trekking on with D2 (more power to ya), I just wanted to throw out the following suggestion to those struggling with how the game is right now: take a breather.
I started a break from D2 a little over a year ago, right after Warlord's Ruin came out. I considered myself a pretty hardcore triumph chaser and got sick of repetitive content (just kinda how this game is). Even the idea of solo flawlessing WR just kinda bored me, and that was the final straw since trying to Solo Flawless dungeons was the last big draw for me. Handed my clan off to someone else and uninstalled.
FOMO is a hard thing to overcome in the moment, but I have never felt like I can't come back to this game at any point while I've not been playing it. I promise you will be able to make up previous content faster than it releases if you do come back to the game (I know this for a fact, I've taken several LONG breaks). I have never NOT been able to recover from time missed in Destiny, no matter how long it is.
To those worried about missing out on the story, the vast majority of it was in the campaigns (at least while I was playing) or seasonal cutscenes (on youtube). Anything else I really care about, I can just read one of the wikis. I burnt out before Final Shape, and was worried at the time about missing out on the conclusion of the story with the Witness (I'm sure we killed him, whatever). I can comfortably say that I just straight up don't care about the story a year after leaving the game. It's there if/when I come back.
My mental health is better for it, I can devote more attention to the people in my life and other passions/activities, and I'm generally a happier person without the regular daily draw of a grindy, MMO-style title like Destiny. My partner is much happier as well because of the above reasons. There are so many other great games out there that I've been enjoying that have healthier communities and dev studios than this one. One comment that I saw a couple years ago that really resonated with me is this: "what if you spent as much time as you've spent in Destiny on something productive?" You would have mastered an art form, developed your career, been more social, or just generally have become a more well-rounded person. Obviously this is a massive oversimplification, but you get my point, this game's play cycle eats up a ton of time.
I hope this is insightful for anyone struggling with D2. I didn't mean it as an essay about why you should quit Destiny, although it definitely reads that way. I hear Salvation's Edge and Vesper Host were good and I am a bit sad I haven't run them, but I know they'll be there if I ever reinstall. That's probably my biggest reason to pick up the game again, although I likely won't unless people start raving about how good an expansion is or something. My best suggestion if you're considering taking a break is to not play for a week or two, and see how you feel about it after that.
Best of luck to Bungie with the road ahead and anyone sticking it out with them. Thanks for all the great times and I hope I have a reason to come back at some point. Shoutout to The Midnight Coup, love my clan, great fellas.

P.S. - Not reading or interacting with comments, I literally don't play this game anymore lmao.
