How do you know if you're idea is more suited for young adults or adults?

I'm writing a fiction set in a dystopian future. The main character is 12 years old and has to navigate a brutal system. I wanted to write a fiction for adults initially and use over the top violence but now I'm wondering if my story, setting and characters are actually more tailored towards young adults. What are some main differences when writing for these audiences?
