Expired BRP before UKVI account

My husband and I did our settled status applications and got around to doing the ones for our children today. I did not realise we had to make a separate UKVI account for each child. We did so today. Their BRP cards expired on the 31st of Dec. When I tried to use the EU exit ID app to take a picture of the brp cards, it said that they were invalid and had expired, though the website says they can still be used for a settled status application after expiration. I am feeling so frustrated and upset with myself for not having realised this earlier. We have also been waiting on an answer for our own applications since November. Any relevant experience or words of advice are most welcome!
