DeepSeek claims its ‘reasoning’ model beats OpenAI’s o1 on certain benchmarks
Chinese AI lab DeepSeek has launched DeepSeek-R1, an open-source reasoning model that it claims outperforms OpenAI’s o1 on several benchmarks, including math and coding tasks. R1 has 671 billion parameters, making it a massive model, but smaller versions can even run on a laptop.
The model is 90-95% cheaper than OpenAI’s, making it highly competitive. However, since it’s a Chinese AI, it is subject to government censorship, refusing to answer questions on topics like Tiananmen Square or Taiwan.
So far I've been very impressed with what DeepSeek can do. I'm encouraging people new to AI not to spend money on Open AI. Just use DeepSeek and learn how AI can be useful.
