Is there only one right way to hold the machine?
My mentor specialises in fine line tattoos and they say if I can master fine line- every other style will be easy for me to get. So they are teaching me how to do fine line predominantly at least for now.
They have a very particular way they want me to hold my machine- with my middle and ring finger wrapped tight in grip wrap and always using my other non dominant hand as a support for my tattooing hand. This makes the space im tattooing feel awkward and small and it doesn’t feel natural or comfortable for me hand at all.
I kind of feel the opposite of support when I do this- my lines are terrible when I have my hands in this position and it takes so much focus for me to even hold my fingers in the positions they want.
When I practice at home i have more freedom to experiment with other hand positions and I feel like I’m progressing without my mentors awkward (for me) hand position, and they say I’m doing good work when I show them the work I do at home on fake skin (work which was not done using their recommended hand position)
But when they are watching over me they have me doing it their way and I do atrocious lines, and they say “yes your lines are more crooked now but if you keep practicing in this position your hand will get stronger and your lines will be better”
They also told me not to look up tutorials online cos I’ll be led astray and pick up bad habits, but all the great tattoo artists I follow online are not using this hand position I’m being taught.
I am asking is there a “right way” to hold the machine? should I continue to try to learn in my mentors position or try to insist that I need to do what feels natural for me and is getting me better results?
