Day trip London to Liverpool

Hello all, I’m fortunate to be visiting London toward end of June for a couple of concerts. Since I’m seeing my favorite living band (Sparks), thought I’d go up to the Poole for Beatles fun times. I did a day trip long ago with the only issue being it was March and super windy so the train had to run more slowly. How realistic is this by rail on a Friday for there and back? Should I just book a room in Liverpool for Friday night? Thank you.
