Struggling with 3 defenders

I do like playing with 3 defenders when having the ball as i try t oconnect between the defence and the midfield. However, when defending, I concede alot, even tho the defence is strong, and mostly the goals comes from the sides, left side or right side i mean. so if smn could helpz, arigato
