The only spells i can do on other people that work are hexes

Basically, I can hex people just fine, but if i try to make a spell for someone to tell the truth, either:

1. The person tells me the truth on my dreams but never IRL.
2. I am the one who ends up revealing truths about myself. Or for instance, it i try to make a spell for someone to have courage to approach me, it causes them to retreat more. I can hex people and it works almost immediately. What am i doing wrong?
