MH:Wilds Feels worse than MH:World?

Discussion

I will preface this by saying that I am a huge Monster Hunter fan, I used to play Monster Hunter before it was cool back on the old hand-helds. Currently I've got about 700 hours total between World and Rise.

I cannot identify why, but Wilds is just NOT hitting the spot. It feels flat out worse than other MH titles and they have made some bizarre design changes to some of the core gameplay mechanics that make me question the direction of future installments. As it stands currently my collective group of MH Friends have decided to no longer get Wilds, which is a sad sad day (considering Wilds is all we talked about for a good year).

The focus system is a great idea but terribly implemented IMO, it rewards low effort gameplay for specific weapon types and makes the game ultimately feel less mechanical. For example, my brother played Long Sword and was hyped to see he was pulling 60-70 dmg combos with the beta sword during focus mode. Cool I thought, then I used Focus mode on my Bow and did 120dmg, then literally seconds later, I did another 170+. I was at max range just quite literally spamming the focus button and popping off huge damage numbers with extremely minimal effort whilst my brother was busting his chops in melee range for less than half of my damage. I killed all of the Beta bosses in minutes by spamming this crap. Sounds like an easy fix, just tune down the damage numbers in the bow? But it won't change the fundamental flaw of the the new focus system where every fight just devolves into holding down the focus button or repeatedly spamming it. Focus mode attacks should happen every 30 seconds to a minute, not in 5 second intervals.

On top of the Focus system the UI seems to get worse with every iteration of MH lol. It's like a challenge they set themselves to make the UI's as convuluted and bloated as possible with every new installment. Wilds definitely wins, even as a long time MH player, finding things in the UI felt near impossible.

The mount system is beyond terrible. It feels clunky and outdated and the mount decides it's going to run off on it's own to any given destination unless you hold down the stop keybind (whoever designed the keykinds for this game needs to be shot as well, they are the worst keybinds i've ever seen in a game, ever.) Even when stopping your mount, if you try to move manually again the mount AI decides to take over and auto-run to the waypoint again leading to a frustrating sequence of just fighting your own mount over and over again.

Hunting should also be monster specific, Wilds has seemingly thrown away the big monster hunting scenarios and has opted for just a big open map where you just hunt everything in one locale. This will lead to more monster clashes, granted, but it also leads to fighting 2 or 3 or even 4 of the same monsters on the same map, often leaving you confused which one you were even fighting to begin with. Me and my brother were fighting 3 monsters at one point, two of which were the same, which completely destroys the 'big bad monster' fantasy.
This is all only relevant if you can fight through the horribly designed matchmaking system to actually get in with your mates in the first place.

It's not all bad, Wilds had some considerably improvements, notably in the environmental interaction department and player convenience with regards to eating food etc, having it all come out of your own local camp instead of trying to find the chef. Ultimately though the game feels like a big step backwards for the franchise.

Let's just say I won't be in a hurry to uninstall World anytime soon. Oh Capcom..
