[US] Is accounting worth starting school for now? 33yo having a quarter life crisis!
I'm 33 years old with no schooling beyond a high school degree.
I currently work a job that I love at a small, local retail business but get paid poorly. I am supposed to end up running the majority of the business within the next decade as the current owner gets older, but even then, it's not a super lucrative business.
I frequently check job boards, but nothing that I'm eligible for seems to be worth leaving my current gig.
I did some free lessons in Excel and enjoyed those. I enjoy collecting and analyzing data. I'm good with computers.
Over the last few years, I've contemplated different fields to go into but am struggling with pulling the trigger on anything. I fiddled around with computer science/coding with CS50 and the Odin Project but just couldn't stick with them to completion. I did find the SQL portion of CS50 pretty interesting.
I like the idea of accounting. The job description sounds like something I could be okay (probably not love, but that's alright) with doing for the next 30 years. I don't want to be rich and I don't think I have that high of expectations for a job lol. I would be so happy with $50-70k per year to start and cost of living raises. I already own a house and am not having kids, so that makes things easier. I'd be happy with an okay work/life balance, paid holidays, and some paid vacation time. I like more behind the scenes work rather than customer facing jobs, so I'd probably want a corporate accounting job if I go this route?
If I were to start school for accounting, I'd probably have to do school part time to keep working full time through it.. so seems like it'd take 6-8 years. It seems like the demand now is sort of low due to the current political and economical climate, but do you feel there will be a demand for accountants then? Do you HATE your job? If so, why? Do you think everything will be offshored by then and I won't be able to find a job?
I see a lot of conflicting statements about there being a shortage of accountants and there being a really hard time finding work and how AI will make there be a lower demand for them.
Sorry, this was a lot, but I appreciate any insight!
Also, I would likely start out with two years at a community college to save money, with the intention of transferring to a 4 year state (Ohio) school to finish up if all goes well. I figure that even if I just finish the two years and decide to stay with my current job, that associates knowledge would come in handy when running a business?
