Career Advice
Hi everyone! This sub has been a huge source of validation and support - so thought I would bring my current work spiral to you and get your advice.
About 2 years ago, I left a toxic workplace and took a job with less responsibility and accountability, but the freedom to reset and put my kids and life first. I worked at this job before, and knew what I was returning to, and knew it would be temporary. Now, my kids are almost 3 and almost 6, and I'm ready to level up and bring my career back into focus. Frankly, I am bored and am worried I'm losing my skill set. Long story, but there is not opportunity or personal interest for growth at my current workplace so I feel like I am in kind of a cool spot. Stable job, but ready for more and want to see what my options are.
I am a nonprofit lifer (so far). I have been at the VP and Director level for 10 years (current director). I have a lot of experience in managing teams, growing programs, fundraising, communications, grant making, grant writing, evaluation, etc. Prior to kids, I was on track to level up into a CEO role, and my small-ish community still sees me in that way, but also I am ready to make some real money. My goal for this year is to increase my salary so I can afford cleaning support at home without financially feeling it.
I'm interested in exploring what a private sector job could look like - but...I'm not really sure where to start. No idea how my skills would fit in in the private sector or what careers I could be looking at. Would LOVE to be a philanthropic advisor or run a family foundation, but not sure how to even start.
So question 1: Has anyone transferred from nonprofit to private sector? What did that look like?
Alternatively, because I am in a job where I have some time and capacity, I am exploring getting a certification in project management or nonprofit leadership to accelerate myself back into a CEO role in the nonprofit sector.
Question 2: Any recommendations for certifications that hold weight or make me a more viable candidate in a leadership role?
Question 3: Is a project management certification worth it?
I really just want to be in charge of my life - my finances, my schedule, being a present parent, etc. I refuse to sacrifice at a weekly rate to miss out on my kids growing up, but I also refuse to sacrifice the work I've poured into my career because I am a mom. My husband doesn't so I don't see why I would have to either.
your thoughts are so welcome!!!!
