I feel like a diagnostic disaster

Support/Advice :shy:

First and foremost, I am not looking for advice on my diagnosis as I know only doctors can help me with that. I just wanted to share my feelings on this matter.

I have been diagnosed with an unspecified bipolar disorder since April of 2023 as I have manic/hypomanic and depressive states that do not last long enough to meet criteria for full episodes.

Recently I was hospitalized for a depressive state, and the doctors at that hospital wrote that my admitting diagnosis was bipolar I. I think the reason they said this was because I told them about a past hospitalization where I went to the ER because I was having thoughts of harming myself, but I also felt like I was floating in the clouds, had more energy than usual, and was quite impulsive. I think the doctors from my most recent hospitalization heard me say that and automatically assumed it was a manic episode because I was admitted for this episode. However, I wasn't sure a bipolar I diagnosis was accurate given the short length of my mood states so I decided to ask my regular psychiatrist about it, and she didn't really offer an opinion on if the episode I was admitted for counted as manic, but she didn't seem to think I have bipolar I, which she is probably right about.

So then my therapist suggested I might have cyclothymia, but I don't know about that either, because from my understanding (please correct me if I am wrong), mood episodes in cyclothymia usually don't require hospitalization. I'm going to talk to my psychiatrist about this, but I really don't think I have cyclothymia.

I know that labels are just labels and I shouldn't care, but I hate feeling so confused about all of this. My manic/hypomanic symptoms in the ER weren't even at their worst, they just became dangerous when combined with thoughts of harming myself. I'm just frustrated and tired I guess.
