Did I screw myself?

I am playing fallout 4 for the first time and am at the hunter/hunted quest, at level 15. I feel like I'm extremely unready. I have hardly any caps or resources. What the heck did I do? And how do I optimize my playthrough?

I'm used to previous fallout games where you get alot of caps and good equipment naturally along the way.
