Review:

As sad as I am that this series ended with this book, at least it didn't end on a super sour note.

The plot in this book is pretty interesting. The entire conservatorship case is very intriguing, and I like the way it develops over the course of the book. I also like that the book doesn't linger too much on M/C and co. leaving McGraw-Byrne, and keeps the plot moving at a good pace.

Both Gabe and Aislinn are great in this book. I kinda wish they leaned more into Gabe's fears of becoming like Sadie, and how overworked he makes himself. However, I'm glad there's far more overt romance with him than there was in the first book. As for Aislinn, her storyline with her grandmother is sweet, but it kind of peters out at a certain point, leaving her kind of free-floating for the rest of the book.

Building up the firm and recruiting partners is fun, though half of them being locked behind diamond choices is decidely less fun. Also, I feel like whoever you end up recruiting doesn't really affect much in the grand scheme of things.

I liked most of the side characters. Beau and Gigi are fun as usual. Getting to recruit Reggie, Linda, and Lina was neat, even if they really don't do much at the end of the day (especially Lina). I felt so bad for that poor Harry guy. Joaquin was an interesting addition, but I feel they really dropped the ball with him. He kinda just exists as a plot device/hook-up option, not doing much else. He doesn't even get a final diamond scene or anything, which was extremely lame.

The Sadie hook-up scene was pretty weird. The other hook-ups are pretty good (both Joaquin scenes and the Gigi/Louis scene) but the Sadie one was kind of jarring. She goes from casual conversation to hitting on M/C so quickly I got whiplash. Also the visual of Sadie in that weird jester kink outfit is something I did NOT need to see. I'm sad there's no Beau romance/hook-up (which was highly requested by fans...and me).

Martin is handled kind of weird to me. I know he's supposed to be this pompous, egotistical guy, but in this book he straight up is an accessory to a murder. That's such a drastic leap in characterization, and I don't like the way they handled Martin as a villain. We also get no proper conclusion to his plot outside of a suggestion that he might get disbarred. On the other hand, Calvin Colby is one of those "barely has screentime" Choices villains that I think works decently well.

Overall, I think this book is an adequate sequel to the first book. Is it fantastic? No, but I don't think it's bad either. I found the plot very engaging, and the characters are mostly portrayed consistently with Book One.

If I remember correctly, there was a third book planned, which ended up getting cancelled, and you can really tell with the last third of the book. The recruited firm members being useless, Joaquin's entire character, Martin's conclusion, the general rushed feeling of the final chapter, all of it hints to the sudden cancellation of the series. I don't quite understand the decision myself, since it was one of the app's most popular series at the time, but hey, I don't claim to understand the decisions Pixelberry makes a lot of the time.
