*My religious cult theory, and tying Cobel to Burt via religion:*

When Burt and Fields were talking about being members of the Lutheran Church, it made me think of the shrine scene in Ms. Cobel's residence, which features a church. Maybe it's the same church? Who knows, but it makes me think there's some sort of culty-church connection between Ms. Cobel and Burt & Fields. Since Cobel and Burt have had ties to Lumon for many years, they may have even know each other as children/young adults within the Lumon-connected Lutheran Church.

The Lutheran church preached that "the innie has a separate soul", which I think was propaganda when the severance procedure was in its infancy and hadn't been tested on humans much yet. This propaganda gave a moral justification to do the procedure on the first group ever to get the procedure-- It is a much easier sell to the community to perform and test these new medical brain procedures on sinners/corrupt people/possible murderers/felons etc. It is harder to sell the idea of doing an untested brain procedure on healthy/non-sinners/good or upstanding "Godly" people. And of those "sinners" who end up getting the procedure, they felt inclined to do a brand new, untested procedure as long as it's a way they could get into heaven.

What I also find interesting is that all protestant churches believe that as long as a person has faith that Jesus died for their sins, it is enough to get them into heaven. This Lutheran church must have been a cult if they strayed from the core tenet of Protestant Christianity--- ie "Jesus doesn't save you from your sins. This severance procedure does!"
