CMU MCDS vs. Columbia MSDS vs. NYU MSDS – Which One Should I Choose?

Hey everyone,

I was fortunate enough to get admitted to CMU’s Master of Computational Data Science (MCDS), Columbia’s MS in Data Science, and NYU’s MS in Data Science, and I’m now trying to decide which program to attend. I’d love to hear insights from current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with these programs.

I’m particularly interested in comparing them based on:

• Coursework & academic rigor: Which program offers the best technical depth and flexibility in electives?
• Job opportunities after graduation: Which program has the strongest placement in top tech, or AI/ML roles?
• Institution prestige & reputation: How do these programs compare in the eyes of employers?
• Social scene & student experience: How is the student life, networking, and collaboration culture at each school?
• Cost of living: Living in NYC vs. Pittsburgh—how does this impact student life and financial considerations?
